In the beginning of This Boy's Life, Tobias Wolff includes two quotations. One of them reads:

Do you "assume a pose" in your day-to-day life? Do you put on a different facade or assume a different personality around different groups of people or in different settings? Explain. Who, if anyone, do you show your "true" self to? Why?
